Open Transit Software Foundation

The Open Transit Software Foundation (OTSF) is a newly-formed nonprofit organization that serves as the organizational and legal home for the OneBusAway project. OTSF’s charter is set up to allow us to take on additional open-source transit software projects as well, and to partner with other organizations with similar aims. Please see the items below or follow the links on the navigation bar for more information on OneBusAway and the Open Transit Software Foundation.

The OneBusAway Project

OneBusAway is an integrated suite of open source software components that stores, manages and delivers real-time information about transit vehicle locations. OneBusAway includes:
  • A suite of end-user applications that deliver real-time information directly to transit riders, including desktop and mobile web applications, Android and iPhone native apps, and SMS and IVR support.
  • Back end systems that accept, store, and interpret real-time vehicle location data in combination with transit schedules and other related data.
  • A suite of application programming interfaces (APIs) that facilitate the support the development of third party applications based on real-time vehicle locations.
For more information, including a current list of regions using OneBusAway, and information for transit agencies and developers, please go to the OneBusAway project home page.

An Effective Governance Structure

The Open Transit Software Foundation itself is newly formed, but has directly evolved from the OneBusAway project's governance structure and practices, which have allowed the project to flourish for the past 5 years. OTSF's members include transit agencies, universities involved in research on transit information systems, companies offering services based on OTSF's software systems, nonprofit organizations whose mission is aligned with OTSF, and indvidual developers working on our software systems. The result is an organization that transit agencies and others can rely on to continue supporting and evolving our software systems. Please see our Governance pages for more details.

Getting Involved

We invite interested people and organizations to join our project! Ways to do this include joining the mailing lists for OneBusAway users and developers, using our software, making a donation (we are a 501(c)(3) organzation, so that contributions are tax deductable), or becoming a project member. Please contact us if you would like additional information.
